A man armed with a knife robbed the Bellacino’s pizza shop on North Main Street in Cornelius Friday. Meanwhile, Davidson police apprehended a man breaking and entering into a West Side home Sunday afternoon, recovering approximately $1,000 of stolen computer equipment in the process. Officers also are investigating the theft of more than $7,000 worth of computers, cameras, and other equipment from a home off Armour Street, along with a case of vandalism at the Wooden Stone Gallery. This year’s expansion of an annual one-night holiday luminaria display throughout town brought in more than $11,000 for the Davidson Housing Coalition, the group said Tuesday. The Noel for Neighbors fund-raiser saw more than 3,500 candle-and-bag lanterns glowing from neighborhoods downtown and along North Main Street to McConnell and River run on Dec. 11.

Davidson police and Davidson and Cornelius firefighters responded to a multi-vehicle collision Saturday night near the I-77 southbound on ramp at Exit 30 that escalated into a major vehicle fire. Meanwhile, a Mooresville resident blacked out or fell asleep while driving on South Main Street on Dec. 6, and hit two trees before coming to rest on an embankment. Davidson’s Town Board on Tuesday voted 5-0 to allow residents to raise a small number of chickens in their backyards, within the town limits. The board also unanimously approved a planning ordinance amendment that prohibits future construction of buildings that front only on an alley. And commissioners revised and then approved new guidelines for town funding of local nonprofit agencies. Read the full story

Once upon a time, folks in Davidson and most small towns kept a few chickens around the house. But local ordinances outlawed the practice years ago. Now, amid a renewed interest in local food and sustainability, Davidson’s Town Board wants to bring back the option of raising chickens in the back yard.
At its meeting Tuesday night, the board will vote on a proposal to revise the town ordinance to allow residents to keep up to four hens on their lots, with some conditions. Tuesday’s meeting also will include a public hearing and vote on a planning ordinance change that would outlaw the construction of homes facing alleys, and the board will vote on new guidelines for how the town funds non-profit agencies.
