A van rear-ended a bus delivering students home from the second day of school at Bailey Middle Wednesday afternoon. Students evacuated the bus and firefighters said there were no injuries to either students or drivers. Read the full story

For 40 years, Davidson-Cornelius Day Care on Gamble Street on Davidson’s West Side has provided weekday care, meals and other services for pre-school children from a diverse mix of working families.
Now, the well-loved community institution is threatened. The weak economy has hurt enrollments, insurance costs are rising sharply and a state program that long funded care for low-income families has all but dried up, leaving board members scrambling to keep the center open.
“We’re going to run out of money this week,” board President Carol Higham said Friday. “We’re holding on to the cliff by our fingernails.”

Map circulated in a CATS riders' alert Friday.
Charlotte Area Transit System said Friday it will discontinue a temporary commuter parking lot next to Community School of Davidson (formerly Children’s Community School) as of Friday, Sept. 4. That will leave riders of the 77x commuter bus to return to parking on Griffith and other streets, closer to downtown.
The temporary lot had been arranged while construction crews resurfaced Griffith Street beginning last October. That work is now complete and the road has been re-striped. Read the full story

Incidents and citations reported this week included a 17-year-old charged with possession of marijuana on Griffith Street, a stolen bicycle off North Main Street, a couple of stolen wallet reports. Meanwhile, we have a traffic alert for Saturday and Sunday, when the YMCA Triathlon may disrupt traffic on local streets.

The Design Review Board voted 4-3 on Wednesday to approve a “certificate of appropriateness” allowing the demolition of a one-story building at 212 S. Main St., next to Town Hall. The demolition, which has yet to be scheduled, would make way for a proposed multistory mixed-use building, called Mooney’s Corner.
The existing one-story building once housed the town library. Current owner Artisan Builders wants to tear it down and build a new office and retail building on the site.

Our Town Cinemas Davidson confirmed Wednesday that it plans to renovate vacant storefronts in Sadler Square as a 4-screen, first-run movie theater that could be open by year’s end. Plans call for “bistro table” seating an an “expanded concession menu” of food and drink. Read the full story

Democrats in Davidson precinct 206, which includes much of old Davidson, will meet Wednesday, Sept. 2, to elect officers and county convention delegates. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. at Town Hall, 216. S. Main St.
The meeting is open to the public. But according to party regulations, only Democrats registered to vote in Precinct 206 may vote for officers or County Convention delegates.
