Davidson firefighters assisted other departments with several auto accidents last week, including one SUV rollover on I-77 between Exits 30 and Exit 31. Meanwhile, two people were taken to a hospital Nov. 18 for injuries sustained in a an accident on Davidson-Concord Road. A malfunctioning propane tank and a possible gas leak inside of a residence prompted emergency responses, as well. Firefighters assisted a homeowner with a propane tank that would not flow properly, and the gas leak was determined to be coming from an outside pipeline’s relief valve. False alarms on the Davidson College campus rounded out the fire calls.

Firefighters assisted police with a number of vehicle accidents over the past two weeks, including two incidents involving deer and one versus a parked car on Concord Road. Kitchen fires and the cross-town power outage on Nov. 14 (“Power outage hits Cornelius & Davidson; 3 schools closed”) kept emergency responders on the road, as did a number of false alarms resulting from construction projects on the Davidson College campus. From a Cornelius house fire to a capsized boat, Davidson firefighters stayed on the road this week responding to a variety of incidents. Investigators believe the house fire Saturday morning around 4:40 a.m. on Coachman’s Trace in Cornelius is the latest in a string of fires set by an arsonist. Emergency crews Saturday also investigated a capsized boat on Lake Norman around Exit 30 and a serious auto accident on Statesville Road in Cornelius on Tuesday. Last Friday night’s house fire in River Run was the main challenge for local firefighters over the past week. Firefighters also investigated two other possible structure fires: One in Davidson Point on Lake Davidson north of town, where a homeowner saw smoke blowing out of air-conditioning vents. The other involved a kitchen stove fire in Cornelius that was out before firefighters arrived.
On Delburg Street last Wednesday, a resident flagged down a passing fire department vehicle to report a power line was sparking after coming in contact with a tree limb. On East Rocky River Road Saturday, firefighters helped Davidson Police clear away a tree that had fallen. Firefighters received a report that a tree had fallen across East Rocky River Road as a result of Thursday’s evening storm. The overnight crew on Engine 3 assisted by cutting the tree into manageable pieces and removing it from the roadway. The same crew investigated a smoke scare shortly after responding to a medical call at The Pines.
A number of minor cooking incidents caused accidental fire alarm activations throughout the week, and Cornelius firefighters battled a vehicle fire on Interstate-77 near Exit 28 on Tuesday. An infant was extricated from a locked vehicle in an unrelated incident at Direct Furniture Connection, and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities Department had to assist a private pavement cleaning company when workers realized that their truck was connected to a fire hydrant that could not be turned off.

Firefighters this week practiced advanced hose line deployment techniques at the Mount Mourne Volunteer Fire Department training tower. Meanwhile, on the roads: Firefighters responded to a number of alarms this week and two reported traffic accidents on I-77. One call, a faulty smoke detector at the Davidson United Methodist Church Youth House, prompted a multi-engine response.

Firefighters responded to a brush fire off Davidson-Concord Road on Saturday, and found that a passerby had put it out with a fire extinguisher. They also helped the driver of a street-cleaning truck last Friday, when he couldn’t remove a refilling hose because the hydrant refused to shut-off. Fire crews were at Davidson Elementary School Wednesday after soldering in the boiler room activated a fire alarm. The week’s calls also included a fire scare at Davidson College’s Sentelle dorm last Thursday, April 14, that was caused by a malfunctioning HVAC motor.
