It’s mid-August and time to think school supplies, new students arriving at Davidson College and even the occasional moving van bringing a family to town. Busy days, but still we must endure those awful dog days of August when even the smallest outdoor activity soaks the back of your shirt with sweat. We can’t wait for those beautiful crisp fall days.

The Iredell County Sheriff’s Department has arrested a 17-year-old Charlotte man in connection with a residential burglary on Langtree Road last month. Meanwhile, Iredell and Davidson detectives are seeking two more suspects in that case and two other break-ins in Davidson that they believe are related. Altogether, items worth nearly $100,000 are missing from the three homes.

A slew of false alarms and two cases of food burning on stoves were the highlights of a relatively quiet week for Davidson firefighters. Units also were called in the overnight hours Friday morning to remove a fallen limb blocking South Main Street. The department also responded to 11 medical calls, including two traffic accidents. More information has emerged this week about the series of related burglaries in east Davidson and south Iredell County, including the size of the thieves’ haul. Police reports made public this week show the the total value of jewelry and other valuables taken from several homes in Davidson and Iredell on July 27 was nearly $100,000.
Meanwhile, police also received reports of other burglaries, in River Run, on Catawba Avenue and at Davidson-Cornelius Day Care, on Gamble Street. And they issued an alert for a suspicious person after an incident Wednesday downtown. Read on for details about these and other incidents, as well as the week’s traffic enforcement.

Davidson police and the Iredell County Sheriff’s office are investigating an apparently related series of burglaries in recent days by young men in vehicles with matching descriptions. In one of the Davidson break-ins, off Davidson-Concord Road, $50,000 in jewelry and other valuables were taken.
