Town Day in downtown Davidson Saturday felt a lot like the Town Days of old, with perhaps a few features you wouldn’t have found in festivals past.

There was plenty of the familiar. Boy Scout Troop 58’s rope bridge challenge another cohort of youngsters. Davidson Presbyterian Church served lunch as always from its massive portable grill. There were games – from ring toss to corn hole – and the “Cake Walk,” a musical contest with cakes and cupcakes for prizes. Read the full story

Weather couldn’t keep local canines and their owners from frolicking at the 2013 Bark in the Park Top Dog Festival on Saturday, April 27, at Historic Rural Hill in Huntersville. Thousands of visitors came for a variety of activities, from live music to demonstrations to dog contests.  Our photographer Gayle Shomer was there to record the scene. Thursday’s full moon over the Lake Norman area was big and bright. But on the other side of the world, earthlings saw a brief (27-minute) partial eclipse, and a pink moon.

We featured this beautiful field of yellow rape in bloom a couple of weeks ago as our photo of the day. Since then, so many readers have sent notes or photos and suggesting we feature it (we already did!) that we’re bringing it back. Today we’re happy to offer another view from Davidson photographer P.K. Donson.

We’re looking for photos that capture the people and places that make Cornelius what it is. It could be a pretty picture from an event, a youth sports team photo, a pet, a quirky wildlife photo or an oddity. Send ‘em to us (editor@corneliusnews.net) and we’ll consider them for publication.

Requirements: Send us whatever you have – color or black-and-white JPGs preferred. If you have the ability to do so, we ask that you resize photos to not more than 600 pixels wide. That box on the front page of the site is exactly 595 pixels by 270 pixels, if you’re able to crop yourself. But you needn’t be limited to that size. Unlike our previous banners, with Photo of the Day, we can take any shape.

‘NEIGHBORWOOD’ TREE PLANTING

Sunny weather greeted art lovers for this weekend’s two-day Art on the Green festival in downtown Davidson. The event featured a variety of local craftspeople and artists, and live music.  And the two days wrapped up with a Concert on the Green Sunday night featuring Davidson College’s symphony and jazz band.

Prizes for the best booths went to: Best in show,  Larry Duke;  Best 3D, Suzie Council of Horse’s Ass Pottery; Best 2D, Jane Ellithorpe.

Davidson College students, staff and professors gathered around the flagpole next to the Chambers Building at 11am Tuesday in a moment of silence to remember those who died or were injured in Monday’s bombing at the Boston Marathon finish line. A few people gathered and the crowd quietly grew as students emerged from classes or their dorms.

In a note to fellow students earlier Tuesday, Student Government Association Chris Ragsdale announced the observance. “Our campus community and our country as a whole have been deeply disturbed by the events that occurred in Boston earlier today. It is indeed a sad time, and a time for reflection and remembrance.”
