Public works crews and utility workers across the region are still cleaning up after Friday night’s big storm, which brought high winds and some of the heaviest rain in recent memory. Up to seven inches of rain fell in a couple of hours, flooding streams and even washing out roads. Trees also toppled onto yards and streets and, in one case, on a house on East Rocky River Road in Davidson. And storm damage forced River Run Country Club shut down golfing for the weekend.

Our staff and readers were out with their cameras this weekend for what astronomers technically refer to as a “perigee full moon” –  a fancy way of saying luna was at her closest point to the earth. Earth & Sky says it was “the moon’s closest encounter with Earth for all of 2013.” We won’t see another like it until August 2014.

Sunday’s Concert on the Green in downtown Davidson went off without something that’s been too common at concerts lately – rain. Hundreds of listeners spread their blankets and put up their tents on the lawn in front of the Davidson library to enjoy two sets of classic, ’80s and ’90s rock by Charlotte-based Pushh.
