Thanks to a team effort by its sales staff, the Davidson College Bookstore has won a national recycling contest put on by apparel maker Champion. The project, affectionately known as “Bottle Man,” was made of about 30 plastic bottles taped together.
Champion ran the contest among college bookstores to promote its Eco Fleece clothing line. Each fleece item, such as a Davidson hoodie or pair of sweatpants, recycles the equivalent of about one 20-ounce plastic bottle.
“Bottle Man,” which greeted customers for about two weeks, won $200 in the “Out of the Box” division of the contest.
The bookstore also has moved its children’s section upstairs, and has expanded the merchandise choices.

About 150 people stood straight, then stretched their arms skyward during a giant yoga class on the Village Green Saturday afternoon. It was the second annual Yoga on the Green, organized by Cornelius yoga studio The Bindu. The event included a free hourlong yoga lesson and live music by Billy Jones & The Pocket.
This year’s event gathered $10 donations from most participants and raised a total of $750 for Davidson Farmer’s Market’s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Donations will be used for program incentives, administrative costs, outreach and advertising needed to restart this program, to increase access to fresh, healthy, local food for everyone in our community.
The Bindu is at 11138-C Treynorth Drive, off NC 115, Cornelius, founded by Kelley Gardner, a certified Anusara Yoga teacher. She led Saturday’s session on the green.

A handful of Community School of Davidson students were out on the Village Green Friday morning offering free juggling lessons. It was part of a student activity in which they teach other students how to juggle. On Friday they took it downtown.
And speaking of juggling, some of the kids also are members of the Lake Norman Jugglers, who recently moved their Sunday afternoon juggling sessions to the Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson.

With a ribbon cutting, tours and a small feast served by local chefs, MSC Industrial Supply Co. on Tuesday showed off its new $31 million “co-headquarters” off I-77 Exit 30. The six-story building overlooking I-77 and Lake Davidson houses 150 employees right now, many who moved from the company’s original headquarters in Melville, NY.
See a related story from Tuesday, “MSC plugs in as Davidson’s newest corporate neighbor.”
The christening was a big milestone for the growing MSC, which decided to split its headquarters in part to help recruiting as it expands its work force. Founded in New York City in 1941 as Sid Tool, the company now has more than 6,000 employees. It sells $2.7 billion a year in industrial tools and supplies to customers ranging from big manufacturers to the military to NASCAR teams.
