Every fall, author and car aficionado Tom Cotter throws a “Woody Party” at his home off Westmoreland Farm Road. It’s a massive gathering of car owners and their cars – everything from vintage sports cars to modern marvels (this year there was a Tesla electric car). The party is named after a 1939 Woody Ford Wagon, the four-wheeled love of Cotter’s life. And it’s got a great story, worth retelling on the 15th anniversary of the first gathering.
“It was 15 years ago that my wife wife found the Woody I sold when I was 19,” said Cotter, an auto racing marketer and writer whose automotive writings appear in New York Times and coffee table books. Read the full story

It was International Walk to School Day around the region, when thousands of schoolkids walked, biked or rode scooters to classes. In Davidson, the event began with a gathering on the Village Green, where the Mayor, town commissioners and employees, and several Town Board candidates joined a throng of walkers to Davidson Elementary School. Buses stopped at the Green and dropped off kids for the walk down South Street. Read the full story

Town commissioners paused during their meeting Tuesday to recognize Malia Ellington, a 16-year-0ld Davidson resident who recently won both national and world triathlon titles. In a brief ceremony, Mayor John Woods cited her accomplishments and asked her to talk about how she got started running.
It was a local 5K race, sponsored by Davidson Lands Conservancy, she recalled. After that, she kept on running and took up triathlons a couple of years ago.
On Sept. 13, the Community School of Davidson junior won her age group (16-19) at the ITU Sprint World Championships in Hyde Park, London. That victory came a month after she won not only her age group, but the overall women’s title at the 2013 Sprint National Triathlon Championship in Milwaukee.
Ellington is the daughter of Brandon and Nancy Ellington and has two siblings, Hannah, 14, and Brandon, 13.
