A round of applause sounded from the crowd Monday morning when military veterans were asked to raise their hands during the Town of Davidson’s annual Veterans Day commemoration. Nearly 200 people assembled for the service on the Village Green in downtown Davidson. Read the full story

Polls opened at 6:30am Wednesday across Mecklenburg County for the 2013 local elections, and they were scheduld to be open until 7:30pm. There were no lines, but a steady stream of single voters early at polling places in Cornelius and Davidson. Voters were choosing local officials for Charlotte Mayor and City Council and town mayors and commissioners across the area. The election also includes races for Charlotte Mecklenburg School Board and two bond referendums. Read the full story

In her 87 years, Mary Archie has lived a lifetime of Davidson history, served the community and become “mom” or “grandma” to generations of children besides her own. Her life and the Ada Jenkins Center on Gamble Street have been intertwined, not just through her recent role as the center’s volunteer snack lady, but decades ago when it was the Davidson Colored School and she was a student under Miss Ada Jenkins herself.
In failing health, she can’t get to the center these days. But on Thursday they pushed her wheelchair into an after-school classroom for an unexpected gathering: By mayoral proclamation it was Mary Archie Day in Davidson. And the Ada Jenkins Center named the classroom in her honor. Read the full story

Horticulture students at North Mecklenburg High School will host their annual Fall Plant Sale this Saturday, from 9am to noon.
The sale will be at the Greenhouse behind the bus parking lot at the high school, 11201 Old Statesville Road (NC 115), Huntersville.
They’re selling pansies for $2 per 4-pack of pansies and $12 a flat. Snapdragons and veggies are $0.50 each. Download an order form here.
