Girl Scouts from Troop 3556 and troop leader Laura Marti addressed the Davidson Town Board Tuesday night, giving a brief presentation about the mural/mosaic they designed for Angels and Sparrows soup kitchen in Huntersville last fall.
The mosaic art piece arose from a visit to the soup kitchen last spring. The 4th grade scouts told commissioners they weren’t old enough to serve at the soup kitchen, but Angels & Sparrows director Sandy Tilley asked them to help brighten the environment by creating the wall art.
The mosaic, entitled “Pond of Hope,” is 36 inches by 39 inches and took many months to create.
Here’s a description of the project they provided after the meeting:
Troop 3556, a troop of 9-year-old girl scouts, had visited Angels and Sparrows Soup Kitchen and were amazed by this community ministry. They were so inspired, that they wanted to help – to lend a hand in some way. But they were too young to serve inside. So Mrs. Tilley pointed to a blank wall and said that empty wall could use a little help. She invited the girls to make something beautiful to fill the empty space. What they came up with from that point forward was entirely up to them.
At their next meeting, the girls got together, sat in a tight circle on the floor, and brainstormed about what might be a nice gift to create fill up that empty wall. There were so many wonderful ideas that it was truly difficult to choose only one among them. Suddenly, one child spoke up and said “I wish we could take all these great ideas and mash them up, like a mosaic, into one great piece of art!”
Their visit to Tuesday’s meeting allowed them to share their story, but it also had another purpose, according to parent Teresa Meletiou: The got to learn a civics lesson by sitting in on a real town meeting. “This vantage point brought them one step closer to attaining their ‘inside government’ badge,” she said.
CORRECTION: This article has been updated to correct the the role of Teresa Meletiou, who is a scout mom, but not a troop leader. We’ve also added troop leader Laura Marti’s name. Oops.
