Home-team Brazil beat Croatia 3-1 Thursday in a thrilling opening game of the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament.  Here in the Lake Norman area, fans gathered for the long-awaited game in front of screens at restaurants. and coffee shops. More than 40 people caught the second half of the match upstairs at Summit Coffee in downtown Davidson, where they recently installed a 70-inch screen, just in time for the tourney.

A rainy Sunday morning gave way to sunshine in the afternoon, clearing the way for a big crowd to pack the Village Green for a Concert on the Green featuring the popular Band of Oz. Our photographer Hannah Plank was there to capture the scene. See the gallery below.

Meanwhile, another Concert on the Green is coming up this Sunday, June 15, from 6-8pm, featuring The Dickens Band. They play classic R&B, classic and modern rock, 1980s retro, reggae, old school and current hip-hop, and everything in between.

Community School of Davidson sixth graders Eve Montgomery and Leah Rumble led visitors on a “tour” of the Holocaust Monday. Many around the Lake Norman area were treated to a rare double rainbow Monday night around 7:30pm. We saw lots of posts on social media. We were on the way back from a party in Iredell County and stopped at Abersham Park, off Grey and Shearer roads, to look and snap a photo. Where were you?

Davidson’s Memorial Day has been a quiet one, but the weekend has included one silent, but noteworthy observance: Someone went through Mimosa Cemetery off South and Walnut streets Sunday and place small flags next to the graves of all those with military connections – some who died in battle and others veterans who died later.
