The Trust for Public Land has a tentative agreement to buy the failed 229-acre Abersham development off Grey and Shearer roads in Davidson in a deal that eventually could allow the Town of Davidson and Mecklenburg County to expand publicly-managed open space in the county’s northeast corner. NOTE: Tuesday’s meeting has been called off because of the winter storm. The meeting will be combined with the monthly work session Jan. 25 at 6 p.m.
The Davidson Town Board holds its regular monthly meeting Tuesday night, with a relatively short agenda that includes an auditor’s report on the 2009-10 budget and a vote on new rules aimed at reducing the impact of new construction on existing neighborhoods. The board also is expected to adopt a resolution allowing the town staff to advertise bids for town purchases via the internet and other electronic means.

Drivers struck deer on East Rocky River and Concord roads over the past two weeks, and a Cornelius driver struck a parked car while looking for hand lotion while driving on South Main Street. Police issued more than a dozen citations for speeding on Griffith Street over the past two weeks, and cited for shoplifting a woman who allegedly stole $30.81 worth of cosmetics from the Harris Teeter supermarket. Construction is nearly complete on the 1.1-mile West Branch Rocky River Greenway, which snakes through the River Run neighborhood and along the river east of downtown Davidson. Mecklenburg County Parks & Recreation is constructing the trail with the help of $1.1 million in federal stimulus funds. Read the full story

This year’s expansion of an annual one-night holiday luminaria display throughout town brought in more than $11,000 for the Davidson Housing Coalition, the group said Tuesday. The Noel for Neighbors fund-raiser saw more than 3,500 candle-and-bag lanterns glowing from neighborhoods downtown and along North Main Street to McConnell and River run on Dec. 11.

Cold-related problems and malfunctioning appliances kept Davidson firefighters busy this week, and local crews helped put out a vehicle fire following an accident near the southbound on-ramp to I-77 Sunday. Firefighters assured a concerned resident that a cat found in a storm drain was not in danger, and investigated two unfounded reports of natural gas leaks.
