The Town of Davidson on Tuesday asked a judge to throw out a lawsuit by CommunityOne Bank challenging the Town Board’s 2011 rezoning of the former Davidson East property, off N.C. 73. In its response to the bank’s Nov. 2 suit, the town argues that the rezoning was legal and does not affect the bank’s ability to develop the property under the previous zoning. Read the full story

Firefighters assisted homeowners with a number of household problems this week. A woman on Cotton Gin Alley called 911 after waking up early Sunday to the smell of electrical smoke, but firefighters were unable to detect smoke or any other hazards upon investigating. A malfunctioning residential fire alarm on Rollingdale Lane prompted an emergency response last Friday, and a homeowner on Callaway Hills Lane requested assistance for an oven broiler that would not turn off. Firefighters responded to a kitchen fire in Duke Residence Hall on the Davidson College campus Sunday and found it had already been put out by a campus police officer. The blaze was caused by burnt food on the stove. Emergency personnel still spent almost an hour clearing smoke from the building and ensuring that the fire had not spread. Meanwhile, several trees and a power line blocked part of Grey Road the night of Nov. 28, and an electrical problem on Northwest Drive prompted firefighters to turn off the power to an apartment. Police are investigating the theft of a woman’s Chevrolet Aveo that was left unoccupied on I-77 the day before Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, two more local drivers had violent encounters with deer over the past two weeks. A woman was hurt in a Nov. 17 accident in which a deer ran into her car on Potts Street, while a man’s 1998 Ford was damaged the following day on NC 115/South Main Street near the Twin Oaks neighborhood.
