Man, it’s hot out there. What do you do? Climb into your water trough, of course. Madelyn Mills of South Street in Davidson captured these kudzu-eating goats doing just that the other day out on the cross-country course at Davidson College.

Madelyn likes to run on the 8K loop of the course and has been seeing a lot of the goats – a herd the college hired to help with its kudzu problem on the north side of campus. She’s a rising 11th grader at Hough High School in Cornelius. Thanks for snapping the photo, Madelyn.

The Arts & Science Council of Charlotte has announced its first round of grants for the 2012 fiscal year, and several north Mecklenburg projects, organizations and events are on the list. They include the planned “Book Garden” next to the Davidson library branch, Downtown Davidson’s April Is for Arts Celebration, the Lake Norman YMCA, Cornelius Youth Orchestra, the Music @ St. Alban’s series, and Davidson-based Circle de Luz.

Carolina Raptor Center and Latta Plantation in Huntersville and the Community Arts Project in Cornelius also got operating grants. (See full list below). Read the full story

The Davidson Public Art Commission is about to start work on its second public art project, a “Book Garden” off Main Street, between the public library and the CVS pharmacy. The $100,000 project was shelved last year when state and federal grants never came through, but it’s back on track thanks to a new grant from Wells Fargo Corp. Read the full story

A solo moped driver was taken to a Charlotte Hospital Friday afternoon after he lost control of his moped and crashed on East Rocky River near the entrance to the River Run neighborhood. Also over the past week, firefighters responded to a number of “good intent” calls, including a report of smoke around North Main Street that was found to be coming from The Soda Shop. Another caller reported that a boat was on fire in the middle of Lake Norman, but upon firefighters’ arrival the fire was determined to be a brush fire on the bank in Iredell County.
