In a year of controversy, the CMS board’s decision to close 11 schools last year was perhaps the most controversial.  The public was told the action would save money. And, in the long-term, that’s still expected to be the case.

After a reception Friday night with friends and family, The Spirited Cyclist opened its downtown Davidson shop on Saturday morning. The new shop is at 129 N. Main St., next to Cats on Main.

The shop is the third for Spirited Cyclist owners Ty Burns and Cathy Green Burns, of the River Run neighborhood, joining shops in Huntersville and Mooresville. Mr. Burns says the shop will aim for a wide market, selling everything from $100 children’s bikes to $12,000 Pinarello road bikes that you might see in the Tour de France. Read the full story

Davidson Elementary School teacher Lindsay Hannum gave her first graders a choice of greeting as they entered her classroom on the first day of school Thursday: a hug, high five or a handshake. A trio of girls picked a group hug, and the 2011-12 school year was off and running.

The competition was fierce again this year Davidson College’s 72nd annual Freshman Cake Race, and not only among the runners. As always, there’s another side to the competition: Whose cake gets top honors.

Several hundred members of the Class of 2015 sprinted away from the starting line in front of Baker Sports Complex just after 5 p.m. They ran in two waves – first the men, then the women.

Sal DelGiudice, of Cleveland, led the men, running just over 6 1/2 minutes for the 1.3-mile loop around campus, along North Main Street and back to Baker. Erin Osment, of Atlanta, topped the women. Read the full story

Hundreds of athletes from around the country will be in town this weekend for the annual Lake Norman YMCA Triathlon. The Saturday morning event will include a swim in Lake Cornelius, and biking and running on routes through the Davidson and Cornelius area.

The triathlon is the Lake Norman YMCA’s biggest annual fund-raiser, benefiting the Community Support Campaign.
