A Davidson College campus police officer was taken to the hospital with injuries Wednesday morning after his cruiser collided with another vehicle on N.C. 115/North Main Street north of downtown.  N.C. 115 was closed in both directions for about 45 minutes after the crash. Read the full story

Davidson College is getting ready to install two arrays of solar panels on Baker Sports Complex, off Concord Road. The installation could save the college about $25,000 a year in energy expenses, Project Manager Kris Krider says, and it will help Davidson advance its commitment to sustainability.

The $600,000 cost of the two solar panel projects is being funded by the college, the Duke Endowment and a North Carolina state grant that is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. Read the full story

Davidson’s Town Board will hold a public hearing Tuesday night, Oct. 11, on proposed changes to the town’s sign ordinance that could let shop owners install bigger signs. The hearing will come during the monthly town board meeting, which also will include votes on a new Parks & Recreation user fee policy and a planning amendment that would revise the town’s bonding requirements for developers.

Also in this column, Visit Lake Norman is collecting information from local businesses that are interested in being vendors for the 2012 Democratic National Convention, and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Utilities recognized 37 local companies for environmental stewardship. The nonprofit Downtown Davidson Inc., which has been in search of a role since the town took over downtown promotion two years ago, has agreed to transfer its nonprofit status to a new organization, the Davidson Civic Investment Commission. The commission is a private-public partnership between the merchants’ group and the town, and will help lead the town’s economic development efforts. Read the full story

Led by teachers, parents, Davidson College volleyball players, and politicians, a parade of local schoolkids participated in International Walk to School Day in Davidson on Wednesday morning.

Students from Davidson Elementary School and Community School of Davidson joined events at more than 3,500 schools nationwide, as well those in 40 countries. The day’s goal was to promote physical activity for kids, create safer routes for walking and bicycling and to build connections between families, schools and the community, according to organizers.
