The N.C. Supreme Court has upheld the powers of campus police departments at religious affiliated colleges and universities to enforce state law, saying they
do not violate the U.S. Constitution’s first amendment separation of church and state. In a ruling issued Thursday, the state’s highest court said Davidson College police officers had the right to arrest a driver near campus in 2006 on charges of driving while intoxicated and reckless driving.
The ruling was a relief to Davidson College officials, who had waited more than year to find out if the justices would agree with the N.C. Court of Appeals. Read the full story

Davidson residents were heading to the polls in healthy numbers Tuesday to vote for mayor, the five Town Board seats and three at-large school board seats.
Voting appeared to be heavier at the Town Hall polling station, Precinct 206, where more than 500 people had voted by around 1:30 p.m. That was just before a bus arrived full of residents from The Pines at Davidson. Read the full story

A series of events at Davidson’s Summit Coffee this month to raise money for the men’s health-focused “Movember” Foundation continues this Friday, Nov. 11, with a Twilight 5K run and festival. Firefighters stayed on the road last week assisting Cornelius and Huntersville units with a house fire, an outside gas leak, and multiple car accidents on I-77. Emergency personnel cleared a Sloan Street residence of smoke from a malfunctioning oven and reset a fire alarm at Davidson College that was triggered by a discharged fire extinguisher, as well. Outside Davidson College’s main academic building Sunday afternoon, a place where Professor Robert Whitton has helped shape young minds for more than 30 years, several hundred people gathered to celebrate his work pray for his recovery after he was struck by a car Thursday.

Davidson College professor Robert Whitton remained in “critical condition” in the intensive care unit at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte Saturday with injuries suffered when he was hit by a car Thursday while crossing Concord Road near campus. Meanwhile, college officials have organized a vigil on campus Sunday afternoon, amid an outpouring of concern for the beloved math professor. Read the full story
