A Davidson resident found cash while walking on a sidewalk in downtown Davidson Thursday evening and is trying to find the owner. The cash has been turned over to the Davidson Police Department, at Town Hall, 216 S. Main St., which is holding the money in case an owner comes forward.

If you lost money in downtown Davidson Thursday, stop at the main information desk at the police department during business hours. Or call 704-892-5131. You’ll need to identify the amount and where it was lost.

A Virginia driver who hit a utility pole on Concord Road Monday was adjusting his GPS unit when he lost control of the car, according to an accident report. Meanwhile, unknown suspects passed two counterfeit $50 bills at the Char Grill restaurant last week. And Davidson Police are investigating a number of thefts this week as well, including one case in which a handgun valued at $1,300 was stolen from a vehicle on Northwest Drive.

More new signs are going up around Davidson this week, part of an ongoing town campaign to spruce up downtown and help visitors find their way to local landmarks. The newest signs, including a several along and around Main Street, point visitors to “Historic Downtown,” the library, Davidson College and the South Main area, among other sites. The town has adopted parking limits on an area of South Street near downtown in response to residents’ concerns about overflow parking from the nearby Stowe’s Corner building and CVS. The changes include parking permits for residents and a 2-hour limit on parking for patrons of Main Street businesses. A driver lost control of his car and struck a telephone pole on Concord Road around 11:35 a.m. on Monday. A woman passenger appeared to have minor injuries after the crash, which closed the town’s main east-west street for a while. Read the full story

Someone has hung a Christmas wreath on a telephone pole at the Concord Road crosswalk where Davidson College Professor Rob Whitton was struck by a car the night of Nov. 3. This week, the town began the first of a series of planned improvements prompted by the fatal incident, installing new warning signs in the middle of the road at Faculty Drive and three other crossings. A 61-year-old Mooresville man who worked at the Rushco Davidson Market was arrested Wednesday on charges of embezzling an undisclosed amount of cash during numerous transactions at the convenience store. Meanwhile, a Pine Road mother stopped by the police station to report that her 14-year-old son had run away from home. And an official from the Lake Norman Christian School also reported than unknown suspects broke into the school sometime last weekend.
