Main Street was busier than usual Friday night and not because of an influx of youngsters swarming the Village Green. Hundreds of art aficionados strolled along Main Street and South Main Street for the annual April Is for Arts Gallery Crawl. The evening also brought folks downtown for music at Summit Coffee, ice cream, and other treats.

Police are investigating two cases in which unknown drivers damaged vehicles in the parking lot of the Davidson Clinic and drove away without leaving contact information or contacting the police. Total damage to the vehicles was estimated at $1,000 each. Elsewhere, a woman’s smart phone was stolen from a bench at the Ada Jenkins Center basketball court, and police are investigating a complaint that a 48-year-old woman threatened a 51-year-old man on Jetton Street. Davidson’s Main Street has been named one of six finalists for a North Carolina Great Places award in a competition sponsored by the state’s planners. And it’s up to us to vote, beginning Wednesday, April 11.

The Town of Davidson announced Monday, April 9, that a special meeting/closed session of the Town Board, which had been scheduled before Tuesday’s monthly board meeting, has been canceled.

The monthly meeting will begin as scheduled at 6 p.m. at Town Hall.

The board is expected to vote on a variety of items, including adding $133,300 to the budget for new police cars, approving amendments to Section 9.2 of the planning ordinance, and seeking additional funding from the federal Centers for Disease Control to continue the Davidson Design for Life program, which is studying the impact of planning on public health. Firefighters last week responded to a report of a gasoline leak at the marina on Portside Drive in Davidson Landing. Employees at Archer’s Towing called 911 when a vehicle began to smoke after its battery arced in a storage area, and the Mecklenburg County fire marshal’s office was called to investigate an illegal outdoor fire on Shearer Street. Police responded to two break-ins at buildings owned by Davidson United Methodist Church on South and Walnut streets March 21.  On Thursday, someone tried to pass a counterfeit $100 bill at the Rushco Market, off I-77 Exit 30, while another suspect was issued a citation Sunday after he was accused of stealing a beer from the Rushco.
