Davidson police are investigating several residential thefts over the past two weeks, one in which a $300 chainsaw was taken from Meadowbrook Lane home where a suspicious person had been seen earlier. In River Run, two newly-installed 25 MPH signs were missing. Meanwhile, a Summers Walk man found that someone had used his Social Security number to file taxes this year. And a woman told police her personal information had been used to open a Dish Network account in February. Officials from the N.C. Department of Transportation, Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) and the Red Line Task Force are seeking a meeting, possibly in mid-June, with Norfolk Southern Corp. to discuss the rail company’s misgivings about the proposed Red Line Regional Rail Project north of Charlotte. The Red Line Task Force of the Metropolitan Transit Commission holds its monthly meeting Wednesday, April 25, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., at Charlotte Mecklenburg Government Center, 600 E. 4th St., Room 266, Charlotte.

Hundreds of visitors strolled among artists’ booths under a bright sun at Art on the Green Saturday in downtown Davidson. Four artists won awards at the event, and they’re among the booths not to miss on Day 2 of the festival Sunday. Meanwhile, the rainy weather has brought cancellation of Sunday night’s first Concert on the Green of the season, which was to have been a performance by the Davidson College Symphony and Jazz Ensemble. Firefighters responded to a several wrecks this week, including one incident at North Main and Beaty streets Monday night that brought injuries, and one on I-77 in which no one was injured. Engine 1 responded to a motorcycle wreck on Catawba Avenue as well, but the driver of the motorcycle left the scene before emergency units arrived. Construction dust at homes on Charden Road and Pine Road triggered smoke detectors that prompted responses from firefighters, as well. Leland Park, the former Davidson College library director, will give a lecture Sunday on the history of the college’s Phi and Eu halls, two of the oldest buildings on campus which are on the National Register of Historic Places.
The talk will be at 4 p.m. at Phi Hall, 216 N. Main St. It’s sponsored by the Davidson Historical Society. Read the full story
