Signs of growth also visible at other area schools
Children’s Community School is getting ready to launch Phase 1 of an expansion to the secondary school level: renovating part of an industrial building on Armour Street into a high school.

Happy Mom Megan Blackwell holds new son, Shaw.
As Charles Schulz taught us in the Peanuts comic strip, “Happiness is a warm puppy!” But today Around Davidson not only found happiness in a new puppy for the Hess household but also in 12,000 Goody “ouchless” hair bands, in hundreds of roses at the home of Emmy and Bill Morrison, in dozens of balloons reaching for the sky to celebrate Children’s Book Week at McKinney Academy and in a new bundle of joy for Greg and Megan Blackwell.
In addition there were smiles of happiness throughout the congregation of Davidson United Methodist Church as they collected almost $5,000 for a delighted Davidson College senior Andrew Lovedale to pursue his summer basketball program for youth back home in Nigeria. Read the full story

Motor vehicle break-ins were reported over the past couple of days in the McConnell and River Run neighborhoods. The reports prompted another police alert urging residents to lock and remove valuables from cars overnight. Police also said Friday they’re stepping up evening patrols in local neighborhoods. Davidson police responded to a variety of home and auto break-ins this week, several on Delburg Street and one at home on the west side of I-77. Meanwhile, a Davidson IB Middle School student was suspended Wednesday afternoon after he was found showing off a knife to friends. Read the full story

Did you lose a wad of cash on Main Street Wednesday? Passersby found “a rather large amount of cash” on the sidewalk between Toast Cafe and the Soda Shop around 11:50 a.m. It has been turned in to the Davidson Police Department. If it’s yours, it may be claimed by identifying the exact amount. Read the full story

A swarm of Realtors fanned out across the region Friday, not selling homes, but volunteering to fix up homes as part of the region’s first Realtors Care Day. The effort included six homes in Davidson: one on Delburg Street, off Beaty Street; one on Sloan Street, just off Griffith Street; and four on Potts Street, on the West Side.
