Thirty-two Davidson residents wrapped up two months of training at Tuesday night’s Town Board meeting with a graduation ceremony for the latest Civics 101 citizens’ academy. The program is designed to boost civic involvement by helping residents learn how things work in town government.

Mayor John Woods handed out “Town of Davidson” pins to the graduates, who took either morning or evening classes. “We hope that we can further the knowledge of what makes Davidson Davidson,” the mayor said. “We are unique community.” Read the full story

A kilted Gordon Clark greeted kilted Ian Robb in the lobby of the Wells Fargo at midday Friday with a handshake and two words, “Clan Cameron.”

“Clan MacFarlane,” replied Mr. Robb.

The two men were dressed proudly in the tartans of their Scottish families to celebrate National Tartan Day, which believe it or not is a Congressionally-proclaimed national holiday.

What’s a “terquasquicentennial”? It’s a 175th anniversary, like the one they celebrated at midday Tuesday at Davidson College, with lunch, speeches, and a hilarious video asking people to pronounce the tongue-twisting anniversary word.

President Carol Quillen welcomed hundreds of students, staff, alumni and friends to a gathering in the Alvarez College Union atrium, noting that the college has changed in many ways, but also has held to its traditions as well. Read the full story

Davidson Elementary School officials said Friday they’re reversing a policy change that had ended the longtime local tradition of fifth-graders’ walking to the Village Green on Friday afternoons. Some downtown merchants and Davidson Elementary School parents are planning to try to revive “Fridays on the Green” this week by organizing a Friday afternoon gathering that would include free ice cream.
