Caleb Cock and Luke Dietrich were among the first to cross the newly-opened boardwalk at Roosevelt Wilson Park, off Griffith Street, on Friday. Public works director Doug Wright had just met with the county inspector and taken down the barricades, said resident Heidi Dietrich, who was there to photograph the scene.

In honor of Memorial Day, Junior ROTC students from W.A. Hough High School and National Honor Society students from Bailey Middle School joined Davidson Mayor John Woods in placing flags Saturday morning at the gravestones of those that served our country in the armed forces. A stretch of good weather for a few last tasks and a final inspection are all that remains on construction of the new boardwalk along Griffith Street at Roosevelt Wilson Park. The new walkway is expected to be completed as early as the end of this week, public works manager Doug Wright said Monday. Read the full story

Davidson College conferred degrees on 455 students Sunday morning in a two-hour ceremony that included the awarding of an honorary degree to gay rights legal expert and 1973 graduate William Eskridge Jr. and the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Award to retired public school teacher Rosemary Klein of Davidson.

It was sunny and warm, with plenty of shade under the oaks in front of the Chambers Building as President Carol Quillen, Dean of Faculty Wendy Raymond and trustees chair John W. Chidsey III handed out diplomas. Read the full story
