HUNTERSVILLE – Area economic development officials this week are trumpeting another win – this time luring a German manufacturer to expand a Huntersville plant instead of moving it out of state. SAERTEX USA LLC said Tuesday it will spend $6.5 million to expand its factory in Huntersville, creating 178 new jobs over the next three years.
The move came with the help of $240,00 in incentive grants from Huntersville, Mecklenburg County and the state of North Carolina.

DavidsonNews.net has been online for 3 years and 10 months, and by now many of you are used to finding town news on an independent local website. That’s a great thing, though sites like DavidsonNews.net are hardly the norm in most towns and neighborhoods across the U.S. As DavidsonNews.net evolves, we’re continuing to win national recognition, and we remain a model others are watching closely. After attending a conference of local news publishers in Chicago recently, I’m more optimistic than ever about the future of local news.

By DAVID BORAKS

Alexandra McArthur, a Davidson College employee who lives in Charlotte, was crowned Ms. Wheelchair America 2011 Saturday in the finals of a weeklong pageant in Grand Rapids, Mich. Ms. McArthur was among 28 contestants from around the country vying for the title.
On Sunday, she was still “in shock” after Saturday night’s ceremony, where judges first announced runners-up and then declared her Ms. Wheelchair America for the coming year.
“I think I’m a little overwhelmed, a little bit in shock, but extremely honored,” the 22-year-old said in a telephone interview. “It means a lot to have been chosen from such incredible women. I’m looking forward to being out in public.”

A long-term partnership between St. Alban’s Episcopal Church in Davidson and a start-up sister church near San Jose, Costa Rica, has drawn a little tighter this summer as parishioners here have gotten to know a pair of Costa Rican visitors.
The Rev. Jorge Urrettia and Melvin Chavez are in town this summer studying English along with a colleague, Petro Mendez. The Rev. Urrettia and Mr. Chavez are being hosted at St. Alban’s, while Mr. Mendez is at St. Mark’s Episcopal in Huntersville.
After several weeks of study, the Rev. Urrettia will give a sermon – in English – at St. Alban’s this Sunday, July 25.
