At meetings with Charlotte City Council and north Meck mayors, CMU officials pledge improvements, including an end to shutoffs.

After numerous public meetings and a lengthy review of water metering and billing, Charlotte Mecklenburg Utilities says it’s committed to providing better service. An action plan presented to the Charlotte City Council last week proposes improvements ranging from adopting new metering equipment to adding staff to evaluate suspect bills.
The utility has been under scrutiny for months because of complaints about erratic and inaccurate water bills. For some water customers, including those whose water has been shut off for nonpayment, the changes can’t come soon enough.

Smoke from a rooftop heating unit on the roof brought Davidson and Cornelius firefighters to the Oak Street Mill in downtown Cornelius Tuesday morning. Twelve hours later, firefighters were checking on a brush fire behind a home in River Run. The past week’s fire calls also included a couple of cooking fires and two false alarms at Davidson College dormitories where steam from showers had set off alarms. A rash of automobile break-ins was reported this week in the River Run neighborhood, including one in which a thief or thieves got away with a Beretta handgun. The rash of thefts
prompted authorities to warn residents about locking their vehicles, and the River Run Property Owners Association is looking into what steps it might take to alleviate the problem. Another police report last week details a case in which a man – reportedly an acquaintance – broke into a Beaty Street residence and sexually assaulted a 15-year-old girl. Town officials, residents and local cyclists will take a bicycle ride through town on Saturday, Sept. 25, to promote bicycle safety, an issue much in the news recently because of collisions between vehicles and bicycles. The 10 a.m. ride will cover about 3 miles of Davidson’s South Prong Greenway as well as town streets, and coincides with the official marking of the greenway as part of the Carolina Thread Trail.
