The sign in John Griffin's hand reads "I (heart symbol) Elaine F. and the USPS!" referring to the Davidson Postmaster. Standing with Mr. Griffin at one of the first boxes installed in McConnell are mailbox committee members LaRay Todd (with his dog, Radjah) and Lotta Griffin.
The mailboxes are in the ground!
After years of talking about it, and at least two rounds of voting on it, residents of the McConnell neighborhood have at last agreed to allow curbside mailboxes on their streets.
The first four boxes were installed Tuesday, followed by a second round of nine on Friday. Carolina Mailboxes will be working in coming days to put up the 50-plus more that were ordered the first week the mailboxes were made available to McConnell residents. Curbside mail delivery is expected to begin in late May.
“I like the design,” said mailbox committee member Lotta Griffin. “I think it’s classic.”

It’s finally official: the McConnell neighborhood has overwhelmingly voted in favor of changing its covenants to allow curbside mailboxes.
The vote follows a fall campaign, the latest of many over the years.
“We will start having mail delivery in McConnell as soon as we decide what design to get,” said Lotta Griffin, a member of the neighborhood’s mailbox committee. “The postmaster is working with us to make the transition as easy as possible.” Read the full story

The McConnell neighborhood holds its annual meeting Tuesday night, Jan. 20, but officers say it likely won’t include a report on the outcome of a petition whether to change covenants to allow mailboxes.
McConnell Homeowners Association Board President John Griffin told DavidsonNews.net on Monday that verification hasn’t been completed for the recent petition to permit curbside mailboxes. He thinks a final count will not be ready for at least another week. Read the full story

McConnell residents went to their neighborhood green over the weekend to sign petitions either for or against adding mailboxes. Helping staff the table were Gretchen Greene (at right) and Rachel Wacker (in green coat).
LaRay Todd has had his water shut off twice since moving to the McConnell neighborhood in Davidson seven months ago. It’s not that Mr. Todd refuses to pay his bills, but rather that his bills were repeatedly sent to his address on Spencer Street – an address not recognized for mail delivery by the U.S. Postal Service. His homeowners association requires that he receive mail through a post office box in town (about a mile down Concord Road) instead of at his curb.
Mail delivery frustrations led Mr. Todd to join an effort to get his neighbors to approve mailboxes for McConnell. “People have had liens put on their homes because of this,” Mr. Todd said. Read the full story
