I love the greenway. A run or walk on it with my dog is part of my daily routine and I am so grateful for that. The natural beauty and peace and quiet are so rejuvenating no matter the weather. I enjoy seeing the familiar faces who share my routine as well as the robins, blue birds, hawks, deer, …whatever might cross my path.
Most days I have a lovely experience. Some days, however, I have encounters that make me wonder if we are all using our best judgment on the trail. In particular, I have concerns about people with dogs and cyclists.

A Charlotte woman was surprised to learn last week that she had backed into a Davidson Elementary School employee after dropping children off at the school. Police investigated after a complaint from the school. Police also are investigating two auto break-ins where thieves stole owner’s manuals and loose change. In one incident on Magnolia Street, someone took two plastic containers of gasoline from the victim’s yard as well. Other items on the blotter this week include theft of a game system and laptop computer from a Central Park Circle home, and a Jetton Street woman’s report of credit card fraud. Firefighters responded to a several alarm malfunctions over the past week, as well as an oven fire on Pine Road and a two-vehicle collision on I-77. Emergency workers helped clear a large tree limb that was blocking North Main Street, and a kitten was rescued from a storm drain on Kiser Corner Lane in Summer’s Walk. The kitten was left with Davidson Police. Read the full story

Ground was broken Saturday for the town’s second major public art project, a $110,000 “book garden” on Main Street, in the area between the CVS pharmacy and the west porch of the Davidson library. Town officials, members of the public art commission and citizens who helped make project possible hoisted shovels during a 10 a.m. ceremony under the big oak on the site. Read the full story

Police are investigating several home break-ins this week, including one at Davidson Landing where an unknown suspect stole a $200 gas-powered leaf blower from an outside utility closet. Two vehicles were also reported stolen, but both were recovered soon after. And a Davidson woman told police that someone defrauded her of more than $11,500 in a series of wire transfers in 2010. Fourteen-year-old high school freshman Malia Ellington of Cornelius went out with a pack of runners and then pulled away to win the Town Day Spartan 5K road race on the Davidson greenway and streets Saturday. The event kicked off a day of fun and music on Town Day 2012 in downtown Davidson.

Town Day, a 5K road race, the Davidson Farmer’s Market, a college lacrosse tournament and other events are expected to bring crowds to downtown Davidson Saturday morning. Plan ahead to find a parking spot (see your options below). Better yet, walk or bike into town for the morning if you can.
The day’s events begin early, with the Davidson Farmer’s Market next to Town Hall. Farmers and volunteers will be on site by 6:30 setting up, and the market runs from 8 a.m. to noon.
