Quinn, 14, and Ethan Schneider, 12, of Huntersville won first place in the 2013 National History Day U.S. finals at the University of Maryland Thursday. They won in the Junior Group Documentary category for their 10-minute film “Hydroelectric Carolinas: How a visionary idea and a chance partnership transformed the Carolinas forever.” Click to watch.

– Helicopters hovered over Lake Norman Wednesday, June 5, as emergency workers from a half-dozen fire and EMS departments from Charlotte to Lincoln County continued three days of specialized water rescue training. LAKE NORMAN – Some of the world’s top professional wakeboarders will be on Lake Norman this weekend, competing in the second of eight stops on the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour. The event comes as the sport is in the midst of a growth spurt, according to Josh Palma, a 28-year-old pro. Read more in SPORTS»

Tre’ McKinney wants to be a professional musician. The Hough High School senior from Huntersville recently took a big step toward that goal. The jazz drummer recently earned the top honors at the music scholarship competition sponsored by the North Carolina Jazz Project. Davidson College’s Vann Center for Ethics hosted a panel discussion on “Ethics in the Media” on Feb. 4, 2013, at the Alvarez College Union 900 Room. Panelists included David Boraks, Editor of DavidsonNews.net; Glenn Burkins, Editor of QCityMetro.com; Stuart Watson, Investigative Reporter for WCNC-TV in Charlotte; Rafael Prieto Zartha, Editorial Director, Qué Pasa Mi Gente, Charlotte; and Candace Cummins Gauthier, Professor of Philosophy and Religion, UNC Wilmington.
The event was moderated by David Perry, director of the Vann Center for Ethics and Professor of Applied Ethics at Davidson.
It was part of the center’s lecture series on Ethics in Professional Life.

The deadline for robots to be “bagged and tagged” for the official 2013 FIRST Robotics competitive season was Feb. 19 at midnight. But the unofficial competition had already begun with a “Harlem Shakes” video competition sponsored by the robot parts supplier AndyMark. Here’s the entry by Pine Lake Prep’s SPORK 3196. It didn’t win, but it sure looks like fun.
