Davidson College President Carol Quillen testified Thursday, Feb. 2, about “Innovations in College Affordability” before a U.S. Senate committee hearing in Washington, D.C.
Her testimony for the Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) focused on The Davidson Trust, Davidson College’s commitment to meeting 100 percent of demonstrated financial need with grants and employment, and without packaged loans.

Cub Scouts from Pack 58 helped install erosion fencing at Brackett Bluff Nature Preserve, near Fisher Farm, on Saturday.
Davidson’s Cub Scout Pack 58 worked with Roy Alexander of the Davidson Lands Conservancy on Saturday, Jan. 28, to install a silt erosion barrier in the new Brackett Bluff Nature Preserve” near Fisher Farm Park.
The silt barrier will help maintain the pristine quality of the preserve by controlling run-off during storms. The Conservancy had discovered that a previous silt fence had begun to fail, and that erosion from an adjacent landfill was threatening the property. Read the full story

Guys, beer, and … a painting class? That was the special Sunday night at Sanctuary of Davidsonon Main Street, which hosted the first of a planned series of Guys’ Night Out events built around a painting class.
Eight adventuresome Davidson guys showed up to get in touch with their inner artists, or maybe the lure was the chance to hoist a few microbrews. Sanctuary owner Kristen Feighery modeled the event after the “Girls’ Night Out” art classes she has been hosting for the past couple of years. Read the full story

Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools has been in the headlines over the past couple weeks week for two different reasons. The district posted school progress reports that included incorrect information about students on track to graduate. Then, on Monday police found the principal of Northwest School of the Arts dead in his garage. Police have confirmed he committed suicide. Psychologists and social workers flooded the school to help students deal with their grief. CMS held a press conference Wednesday to talk about these events. Lisa Miller of our news partner WFAE was there, and talked with local “All Things Considered” host Mark Rumsey about the district’s responses.
