Davidson College and the Town of Davidson trace their origins to 1837, when a group of Presbyterians paid William Lee Davidson $1,500 for 469 acres of wooded land along the road between Charlotte and Statesville. In the 175 years since, Davidson has evolved into a unique place with a story to tell, a story about citizens committed to making our town a better place.
It has been more three decades since anyone tried to tell that story in a book, and so much has changed – not only the place, but our way of looking at it. This year, as the college and the town celebrate 175th anniversaries, authors Jan Blodgett and Ralph B. Levering have updated that history with a new volume titled “One Town Many Voices: A History of Davidson, North Carolina.” Read the full story

Workers removed stucco outside Summit Coffee on Main Street Wednesday. (David Boraks/DavidsonNews.net)
We wrote in January about the “sprucing up” over the winter at Summit Coffee on Main Street, with a new inside paint job and a new marketing push. Now it’s the outside of the building that’s getting a makeover.
Owner Hugh Barger recently decided to remove a layer of stucco covering the century-old brick building at 128 S. Main St. His plans were approved in February by the town’s Design Review Board, and work began this week.
“The stucco was peeling so with the concurrence of the (DRB) the decision was made to remove the stucco and leave the original brick. Mortar work will repair any defective joints,” Mr. Barger said. “We think it is going to be a great improvement.”

“Hey, what is the deal with all of the little green worms falling from above?” Davidson resident Sara Rubens asks.
They’re canker worms, and depending on whom you ask they’re either cute pets, or awful pests. The eggs hatch and worms begin dangling every year as the foliage begins to appear, which this year seems to be a bit earlier than usual.
