Davidson Farmer’s Market officials and supporters and local art lovers will gather Saturday afternoon in downtown Davidson to dedicate artist Dave Merck’s newly completed market-theme mural.

Mr. Merck was out sipping coffee and completing a few last-minute touch-ups on Friday, in preparation for Saturday’s 12:30 p.m.  dedication. The mural is on the south exterior wall of Summit Coffee, 128 S. Main St.

The dedication follows Saturday’s weekly Davidson Farmer’s Market, which runs from 8 a.m. to noon on the market ground behind Summit Coffee and next to Town Hall.

It’s October!  Time for apple picking, pumpkin searching, costume planning and of course, Boy Scout popcorn.  Just like Girl Scout cookies in the spring, one cannot refuse good popcorn for a good purpose.  Selling all kinds of delicious popcorn this past Sunday at Harris Teeter in Davidson were Ryan and Will Densmore, Thomas Petrie and Alex Dellinger.  The scouts were quick to mention that Trail’s End, provider of the popcorn, ships popcorn to U.S. troops around the world and that 70 percent of troop sales goes to local scouting.  For more information on Davidson scouting, go to www.cubpack58.org.  Popcorn would give you something tasty to munch while watching this Wednesday’s much anticipated debate between President Obama and Governor Romney.

Hard to believe, but it’s been 10 years since a group of parents and teachers organized the first schoolwide running program at Davidson Elementary School.  The 10th season of Tigers on the Prowl kicked off Thursday with waves of students circling a baseball field at McEver Fields off South Street, across from the school. Did you put your trash and recycling out Wednesday morning? This week is the last under the town’s current schedule. We’re all getting new trash and recycling bins and the pickup schedule will changebeginning Oct. 1.

Contractor Republic Waste Services has been collecting our old garbage carts, and hauling them to a temporary trash can graveyard on Bradford Park Drive, off Robert Walker Drive in the Bailey Springs neighborhood. Thousands of the old brown, blue and green trash bins are stacked high awaiting removal. Meanwhile, a supply of new red recycling carts and black trash carts is awaiting delivery. Contractors for the N.C. Department of Transportation are down to the last few punch list items on its summer repaving project on N.C. 115.
