Every year at the holidays, The Needlecraft Center on Main Street collects hats and scarves from among its customers for those in need, usually in Appalachia. This year, they’re shifting gears and offering help to people in the Northeast dealing with the devastation of Hurricane Sandy.

The Needlecraft Center decided to join an effort by is yarn distributor, Knitting Fever, to gather cold weather gear for storm victims. The company is in Amityville, N.Y., on Long Island, and many of its own employees were affected by the storm. Read the full story

Local officials and organizers of the Carolina Thread Trail unveiled a stone monument Saturday marking the 100th mile of the Thread. Supporters of the Carolina Thread Trail, local officials and residents gathered at the West Branch Greenway in Davidson Saturday morning to celebrate a couple of milestones. It was the fifth anniversary of the Thread Trail, a planned network of greenways and trails that eventually could stretch 1,400 miles and link 15 counties in North and South Carolina. It also marked the 100th mile of completed trail, and organizers unveiled a stone bench monument to mark the occasion. Read the full story

A clear cool night in downtown Davidson was just right for the 2nd annual Summit Coffee Twilight 5K Saturday night. About 185 runners traveled over dark streets and a section of the Kincaid Greenway lit by luminaria – candle-lit bags.

Patrick Braxton-Andrew of Davidson crossed the line first, while Kathy Goody, also of Davidson, was the top woman. (See results in our latest “Running” column, in Sports.) Read the full story
