Davidson College students packed 10,080 meals destined to be aid to developing nations Tuesday afternoon for the international hunger relief organization Stop Hunger Now.

At a reception Tuesday afternoon at The Business Center at South Main Square, some of the guests weren’t actually in physical attendance. They were in Charlotte and Mooresville – beamed in thanks to the wonders of electronic communication.  The event marked the debut of a state-of-the-art videoconferencing service, available to local businesses and organizations for meetings, job interviews and other long-distance events.

The office center has teamed up with MI-Connection Communications System to offer the service, which is being described as the only one of its kind in the Lake Norman area, able to connect three locations by video link simultaneously. Read the full story

A sudden snowstorm blew onto Wilson Field at Davidson College on Saturday afternoon, forcing suspension of the Wildcats’ game against George Washington. Davidson was leading 6-5 and was later declared the winner.

A fast-falling snow accompanied by thunder blew through downtown Davidson after 3:30 on Saturday afternoon. The snow had people out taking photos and throwing snowballs, and gave at least one family a chance to play on the Village Green.

The National Weather Service had a winter weather advisory in effect all day Saturday. On Saturday afternoon, it was extended through noon on Sunday.

Friday’s home baseball opener at Davidson College included a big night on the field, including a 7-5 victory over George Washington and a grand slam by Forrest Brandt, as well as fun in the stands: a tribute to Wildcats’ Coach Dick Cooke as fans wore fake mustaches like the one he wears naturally.

Coach Cooke was seriously injured in a car accident in September. He still needs a crutch to get around, Read the full story

Black History Month recognizes the advances that African Americans have made on the road from slavery to freedom, Charlotte Mayor Anthony Foxx said in a visit to Ingersoll Rand in Davidson Tuesday. But, he added, there’s still a ways to go.

“We’re not done yet,” the mayor said. “When I go into the urban centers of our city, I see (high) schools where there are 50 percent (graduation rates). I see use mployment lines, long lines of people of every race, background, persuasion. When I think about some of the challenges we face with health disparities, and going on down the list, there are plenty of issues for us to keep working on.” Read the full story
