Saturday’s Run Too Overcome attracted more than 250 runners for 5K and 10K races in downtown Davidson and dozens more for a 1-mile kids’ fun run. The event raised money and awareness for special needs education in area schools. The highlight of the day was a blazing victory in the 5K by U.S. Olympic runner Anthony Famiglietti, who lives and trains in Davidson. See the story in SPORTS»

The deadline for robots to be “bagged and tagged” for the official 2013 FIRST Robotics competitive season was Feb. 19 at midnight. But the unofficial competition had already begun with a “Harlem Shakes” video competition sponsored by the robot parts supplier AndyMark. Here’s the entry by Pine Lake Prep’s SPORK 3196. It didn’t win, but it sure looks like fun.

Davidson’s men’s basketball team closed out its regular season Saturday afternoon with a convincing 83-48 victory over Georgia Southern at Belk Arena.

It was Senior Day, with a ceremony honoring four players: Jake Cohen, JP Kuhlman, Nik Cochran and Clint Mann. Also honored were senior cheerleaders and Mr. Cat, a student who has been the Wildcat mascot for the past four years. At game’s end, he was unmasked – as David Lloyd. Read the full story

Author Robert A. Caro, whose award-winning biographies have told the stories of late President Lyndon B. Johnson and Robert Moses, spoke Tuesday night, Feb. 26, 2013, at Davidson College.

He told the audience at Duke Family Performance Hall he’s still writing about Johnson because “you’re always learning something new.”

Mr. Caro talked about how President Johnson had the will and the power to make things happen in Washington – and that’s what fascinates him. “I try to explain that in my books, how he’s doing it. To me at least, it’s not only fascinating, but revelatory, to see how political power is used by a president who’s a master at doing it,” he said.

“Ken and I have made exercising and staying healthy a priority”, says Stephanie Bloom of Davidson. “Both of our families battle obesity so we shift our schedules a lot to make it happen.”

Sometimes this means bringing Sam, 4, to the child watch at CrossFit in Davidson, on Depot Street.

Stephanie and Ken alternate morning or evening classes to ensure they work out daily and they have Charlie, 7 and Sam, 4, enrolled in at least one exercise activity. The boys love CrossFit Kids, so their parents take them as often as possible. Read the full story

Barriers blocking traffic on the north end of June Washam Road have come down as construction begins on the first homes in River Run Phase 5, now known as The Reserve at River Run. Seniors were treated to a little sweetness at the North Mecklenburg Senior Center in Huntersville the other day during a Valentine’s Day cup cake Decorating Program. Sue Weber, of NC Littlecakes, provided all the materials including yellow cupcakes, frosting, sprinkles, and more for the seniors to make Valentine Cupcakes for their loved ones and themselves. It was hard not to lick our fingers!!
