“I was kind of surprised I had to sit in a ditch,” said Davidson College Biology Major, Spencer Chadinha. He joined others in “Animal Behavior” for a bird-watching afternoon class on Langtree Road at the Davidson College Lake Campus in Mooresville.

“It’s nice to be outside for class. It’s pretty cool. If I have to spend my afternoon in class, I’m glad to be hanging out watching birds,” Spencer said, as he sat tucked on a small grassy knoll. Read the full story

That gauntlet of lemonade stands set up on Davidson’s streets on Saturday really delivered, and that means computers for local school kids who need them. Organizers with E3D (Eliminate Davidson’s Digital Divide) said Sunday night the effort raised $3,134 – the equivalent of about 10 new or 30 refurbished computers.

The nonprofit E3D estimates there are 50 students at Davidson Elementary School alone who don’t have the advantage of a home computer with an internet connection. Founded in February by town residents, the group is working with public schools in Davidson and Cornelius as well as the Ada Jenkins Center to obtain computers and provide technical support. Davidson College sent 447 members of the Class of 2013 off into the world on Sunday morning in a ceremony that included remarks by President Carol Quillen, teaching awards for two professors, and community service awards for a professor and a student.

The threat of rain spoiled an outdoor graduation for this year, sending graduates indoors to Belk Arena.

The weather was perfect Thursday afternoon for the 23rd annual Business After Hours networking reception at the EnergyExplorium, at Duke Energy’s McGuire Nuclear Station on Lake Norman. The event brought businesspeople from Mecklenburg, Iredell and Lincoln counties.

Guests sampled burgers, chips and dips, sandwiches, chicken wings, desserts and other food from 17 area restaurants and caterers. DJ Echo provided the music and some guests actually got out on the water for boat tours around by Luxury Yacht. Read the full story

Thursday was the annual butterfly release a Davidson College Presbyterian Church Weekday Preschool. Organizers managed to come up with a record 100 butterflies to release, as kids sang songs and wore butterfly hats and masks. DavidsonNews.net’s Gayle Shomer was there to record the scene.
