PHOTOS OF THE DAY
We’re looking for photos that capture the people and places that make Davidson what it is. It could be a pretty picture from an event, a youth sports team photo, a pet, a quirky wildlife photo or an oddity. Send ‘em to us (editor@davidsonnews.net) and we’ll consider them for publication.
Requirements: Send us whatever you have – color or black-and-white JPGs preferred. If you have the ability to do so, we ask that you resize photos to not more than 600 pixels wide. That box on the front page of the site is exactly 595 pixels by 270 pixels, if you’re able to crop yourself. But you needn’t be limited to that size. Unlike our previous banners, with Photo of the Day, we can take any shape.
Wondering if you have something worthy? Call (704-896-0569) or email at the address above. And thanks for joining us!

The trees are gone.
A local tree service cut down the two Eastern Red Cedars on either side of the main entrance the Chambers Building at Davidson College Thursday. Davidson College officials decided to cut the trees after damage in a July 4 storm.
One tree lost major branches in the high winds, and a later inspected showed cavities within the main trunk. The other tree was removed “to maintain the symmetry of the Chambers façade,” the college said.
Thanks to Gordon Clark of Davidson Village Inn and Wendy Roberts of the college for sharing their photos.

With dark skies threatening rain, Davidson’s July 4 parade from McEver Fields to the Village Green sneaked off a few minutes early Thursday afternoon, with kids on bicycles, in wagons or just riding in grandpa’s arms. Marchers barely made it to the Green when high winds began blowing and a downpour ensued. Thunder crashed during the National Anthem, and then the rains came, forcing cancellation of the Concert on the Green with The New Familiars.
The short but fierce storm knocked down limbs around town, including one at a house on South Street where the parade had just passed. A short while later, the sun was out again.

Amelie, Tristan and their catch.
In the end, it took a pair of young but experienced backyard chicken raisers to chase down that rooster that’s been wandering around town lately.
Tristan and Amelie Coleman of Virginia Drive were downtown Wednesday evening when they came upon the rooster, trying to cross Main Street and holding up traffic.
They chased it onto campus, where Tristan, 8, caught it by the tail and held on until Amelie, 4, could scoop it up in her arms. Read the full story
