Fellowship and fun were just as much the issues of the day as fundraising at the Access to Success Foundation’s Andrew Lovedale 5K Saturday morning, Sept. 6. Fans watched as 173 local runners competed on the cross country course behind Davidson College’s Baker Sports Complex in the annual event that raises funds for underprivileged youth in Benin City, Nigeria. More than 150 members of Davidson College’s Class of 2017 walked away with baked and frosted prizes Wednesday at the 74th Freshman Cake Race. The race annually marks the end of a week of orientation activities for incoming students and brings community members onto campus for a bit of fun.

Runners followed a 1.3-mile route around the edge of campus. Winners get to select and take home a cake donated by community members and college staff, with faster runners getting first pick. Athletic Department staff took great care to explain the procedures for the start of the race after a misfire of the starting gun at last year’s race caused most of the runners to start early. Four Days. Twelve Students. Summer Photo Camp.

Enough candy to keep us pumped and young, eager eyes intent on escape.

Ten girls and 2 boys were the opposite demographics of what greeted me when I learned photography at their ages, 11-14. Times change.

I brought old-fashioned metal reels and tanks and film. They closed their eyes and imagined the process of using chemicals and agitating and waiting patiently for the film to dry before seeing the images. Read the full story
