The late Davidson College math professor Rob Whitton was also a music lover, and often turned up wherever local musicians were performing around town. On Saturday, many of those musicians performed during a day-long tribute at Summit Coffee and The Birdsnest in downtown Davidson.
Professor Whitton died last November after he was struck by a car on Concord Road, near Faculty Drive, while walking home from campus. Read the full story

Saturday was mostly cloudy over the Lake Norman area, but the skies cleared intermittently, offering glimpses of a spectacular “super moon.” The moon was at perigee – its closest point to earth.

Fourteen-year-old high school freshman Malia Ellington of Cornelius went out with a pack of runners and then pulled away to win the Town Day Spartan 5K road race on the Davidson greenway and streets Saturday. The event kicked off a day of fun and music on Town Day 2012 in downtown Davidson.

Hundreds of visitors strolled among artists’ booths under a bright sun at Art on the Green Saturday in downtown Davidson. Four artists won awards at the event, and they’re among the booths not to miss on Day 2 of the festival Sunday. Meanwhile, the rainy weather has brought cancellation of Sunday night’s first Concert on the Green of the season, which was to have been a performance by the Davidson College Symphony and Jazz Ensemble.
