This year’s expansion of an annual one-night holiday luminaria display throughout town brought in more than $11,000 for the Davidson Housing Coalition, the group said Tuesday.  The Noel for Neighbors fund-raiser saw more than 3,500 candle-and-bag lanterns glowing from neighborhoods downtown and along North Main Street to McConnell and River run on Dec. 11.

PHOTOS OF THE DAY

We’re looking for photos that capture the people and places that make Davidson what it is. It could be a pretty picture or an event, a youth sports team photo or a pet, a quirky wildlife photo or an oddity. Send ‘em to us (editor@davidsonnews.net) and we’ll consider them for publication.

Requirements: Send us whatever you have – color or black-and-white JPGs preferred. If you have the ability to do so, we ask that you resize photos to not more than 600 pixels wide. That box on the front page of the site is exactly 595 pixels by 270 pixels, if you’re able to crop yourself. But you needn’t be limited to that size. Unlike our previous banners, with Photo of the Day, we can take any shape.

Ellen Giduz, who last year became director of both the Davidson and Cornelius public library branches as the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library cut staff, on Wednesday won the system’s top leadership award.

The Davidson resident and 5-year library employee won the Carol B. Myers Leadership Award, which is named in honor of a former library leader and annually honors an employee “whose leadership, dedication and desire has been instrumental in moving Charlotte Mecklenburg Library forward in achieving its goals,” according to the library. Davidson resident and photographer P.K. Donson created this panorama of Main Street Davidson from several photos shot one recent morning at 5 a.m. “It was kind of eerie with no cars or people out there,” she said.

For camera fans: She used a Canon camera on a tripod, and shot the series of photos at F22, 100 ISO and a very slow shutter speed (to get maximum clarity).

A Davidson holiday tradition that started about a decade ago in the McConnell and St. Alban’s neighborhoods is poised to spread across town next weekend. In a fund-raiser for Davidson Housing Coalition, residents will line walks and streets with luminaria – small lanterns made of candles in bags – on Saturday night, Dec. 11.

More than 20,000 people are expected in town this week for Christmas in Davidson 2010, which runs Thursday to Saturday nights downtown. This year’s festival is scaled back somewhat from recent years, but it will be more Davidson-focused, according to interim downtown manager Kim Fleming.

Davidsonians young and old gathered Wednesday morning, Nov. 24, at Town Hall to present longtime Davidson resident, volunteer and businessman Ralph Quackenbush with  the annual G. Jackson Burney Community Service Award.
