Charlotte runners Stephen Spada and Lisa Mulvey were the top man and woman in Saturday’s Run for Green half-marathon through the streets and greenways of Davidson. Davidson’s Town Board on Tuesday endorsed a proposal for high-occupancy toll lanes on I-77, which could help ease congestion and provide money to widen the highway between north Charlotte and Cornelius. The board also approved historic landmark status for a modernist house on Lorimer Road and a Jim Crow-era store on the West Side. And the meeting saw a rare 3-2 split vote on final item of the night – a Davidson Lands Conservancy request to allow a “beer garden” on the Village Green after this Saturday’s Run for Green road races.

More than 300 people so far have bought engraved bricks in a fund-raiser to keep the Davidson public library branch open for another year. So what will happen to all those pavers? The Davidson Library Task Force on Monday got its first look at drawings for a renovated patio area in front of the branch that will feature the bricks.
Fund-raising hits $100,000 mark, but $75,000 still needed by Sept. 30. Details below.

Want a piece of Tom Cotter? The Davidson resident and sports marketer is selling parts of himself as he raises money for a charity called Team for Kids and prepares to run in the New York Marathon this November. Also, the Community Arts Project of Cornelius has begun ticket sales for its annual Taste of Art fund-raiser Oct. 5 at Fresh Market. Meanwhile, a pair of charity golf tournaments is coming up next week at Birkdale Golf Club: the annual Rotary Club of North Mecklenburg Charity Golf Tournament is Monday. Davidson’s Library Task Force is organizing an all-day 15th anniversary celebration Sept. 29 at the branch on the Village Green with music, kids’ programs and an evening reception. The event is part of an 8-week campaign to raise $175,000 to keep the branch open this year amid county funding cuts. Meanwhile, with a little more than three weeks left, the campaign has passed the halfway mark, with $90,000 raised.

A group of athletes from Davidson-based Ingersoll-Rand recently competed in a Mooresville triathlon, and raised $60,000 for Davidson’s Ada Jenkins Center. Also in this column, a list of upcoming benefit events in and around Davidson, including the Lake Norman YMCA’s Community Garage Sale and a Women of NASCAR dinner to help pay for building a Habitat for Humanity House. Fund-raising effort now at $70,000; events in the works
Updated 4:51 p.m.
Thanks to a big turnout of volunteers, library branches in Davidson and Matthews will be open an extra day – Mondays – beginning Sept. 13, Charlotte Mecklenburg Library officials announced Monday.
Beginning on that date, the branches will be open from 1-7 p.m. on Mondays. That means the branches now will be open five days a week, for 38 hours. (See full listing of hours below.)

The Davidson Library Task Force has reached the $60,000 mark in its campaign to raise enough money to keep the local library branch open for another year. The total, as of Monday, includes donations from 195 people, according to task force members.
