Firefighters responded to a several wrecks this week, including one incident at North Main and Beaty streets Monday night that brought injuries, and one on I-77 in which no one was injured. Engine 1 responded to a motorcycle wreck on Catawba Avenue as well, but the driver of the motorcycle left the scene before emergency units arrived. Construction dust at homes on Charden Road and Pine Road triggered smoke detectors that prompted responses from firefighters, as well. Police are investigating two cases in which unknown drivers damaged vehicles in the parking lot of the Davidson Clinic and drove away without leaving contact information or contacting the police. Total damage to the vehicles was estimated at $1,000 each. Elsewhere, a woman’s smart phone was stolen from a bench at the Ada Jenkins Center basketball court, and police are investigating a complaint that a 48-year-old woman threatened a 51-year-old man on Jetton Street. Davidson’s Town Board adopted a new animal control ordinance Tuesday night that updates and consolidates existing rules and adds a new ban on “tethering” – the practice of chaining unattended dogs. The board also voted to renew the town’s contract with the City of Charlotte Animal Control for another year, approved master plan changes for the Exit 30-area Northeast Quadrant and River Run Phase 5 projects, and amended planning rules governing building facade design. Officials said the latter change was intended to help an unnamed developer considering a project in town. Read the full story

Firefighters last week responded to a report of a gasoline leak at the marina on Portside Drive in Davidson Landing. Employees at Archer’s Towing called 911 when a vehicle began to smoke after its battery arced in a storage area, and the Mecklenburg County fire marshal’s office was called to investigate an illegal outdoor fire on Shearer Street. Davidson’s Town Board will hold a 30-minute closed session before its regularly scheduled meeting Tuesday night, April 10. The topic has not been disclosed. The closed session begins at 5:30 p.m., and the board “anticipates” returning to open session at 6 p.m., according to an announcement Thursday. (UPDATE: On Monday 4/9/12 the board announced it was canceling the closed session.)

Police responded to two break-ins at buildings owned by Davidson United Methodist Church on South and Walnut streets March 21. On Thursday, someone tried to pass a counterfeit $100 bill at the Rushco Market, off I-77 Exit 30, while another suspect was issued a citation Sunday after he was accused of stealing a beer from the Rushco.
