A public hearing April 18 will seek comments on four scenarios being considered for toll lanes that would help pay for widening I-77 north of Charlotte.

The 2012 summer season of the Davidson Farmer’s Market opens this Saturday, April 7. Volunteers were setting up over the weekend for the season-opening market, which will bring more vendors, demonstrations by Chef Vera Samuels, music by Barrie Howard, a Growing Kids Club and more.

The market runs every Saturday, 8 a.m. to noon, through October next to Town Hall in downtown Davidson.

Davidson celebrities will soon get a chance to further their positive impact on the community – from behind bars. On Wednesday, April 4, Davidson College will host “Lock-Up to Lock Out Domestic Violence,” to raise money for construction of a new United Family Services domestic violence shelter in Charlotte.

Prominent Davidson College and community members have volunteered to participate by spending hard time in a makeshift jail constructed in the college’s Alvarez College Union Atrium. From that cell they will place calls to friends, obtaining pledges of “bail” that will benefit the UFS shelter project. Read the full story

Davidson College’s theater department this week is presenting a production of “In the Blood,” a sort of modern “Scarlet Letter” tale by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks. And Ms. Parks will be on campus Tuesday, April 3, for two public events. Local human rights activists are hosting a three-day event called “Abolish” in Davidson beginning Thursday to raise awareness of global sex trafficking.
