Lake Norman Kiwanis Club will host a reception and information session in Davidson Thursday, April 26, to introduce and raise money for a new after-school enrichment program called MusicalMinds that is coming to Blythe Elementary School in Huntersville next fall.

Hundreds of visitors strolled among artists’ booths under a bright sun at Art on the Green Saturday in downtown Davidson. Four artists won awards at the event, and they’re among the booths not to miss on Day 2 of the festival Sunday. Meanwhile, the rainy weather has brought cancellation of Sunday night’s first Concert on the Green of the season, which was to have been a performance by the Davidson College Symphony and Jazz Ensemble. The Antiquity Bridge at the end of South Street will be closed on the Davidson side tomorrow, April 21, from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. for the Miles for Marnie Duathalon Road Race. The bridge will reopen as soon as the race has concluded. Download a copy of the race map (PDF) on the town website.

Davidson College and the Jewish community of Lake Norman will host a Yom HaShoah Holocaust remembrance event Thursday night, with music and contemplation. Also on the local church calendar: A breakfast Saturday morning and Mass Choir concert Sunday night, both at Davidson Presbyterian Church; and a “Mini-Golf Mania” tournament for Young Life at Lake Norman Miniature Golf. Davidson College invites the public to its inaugural Africana Festival on Saturday afternoon April 21. The event will be held in the Alvarez College Union beginning at 4:30 p.m., and there is no charge to attend.

The festival will highlight the heritage and cultures of international students and students who come from families of African ancestry through lectures, performances and workshops. The cultures represented will include African, African-American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-European, Afro-Asian, and Afro-Latino. Read the full story
