ReadDavidson has picked Ann Patchett’s novel “State of Wonder” as this year’s townwide reading book. The program begins Friday with a live internet video chat with Ms. Patchett, and includes a variety of other events in the coming weeks.

Friday’s live webcast is open to the public at 1 p.m.,  at Community School of Davidson High School, 404 Armour St. in Davidson. Also there will be several high school English classes. Read the full story

Rain got in the way of Sunday night’s final 2012 Concert on the Green featuring the Davidson College Symphony. Organizers called off the concert early Sunday afternoon amid the likelihood of showers and thunderstorms all afternoon and into the evening. Read the full story

The Davidson Lands Conservancy’s annual Green Day Festival and Run for Green road races are scheduled in downtown Davidson this Saturday, Sept. 15, featuring running, live entertainment, a hawk release, and green exhibitors. Davidson’s Town Board has a pair of meetings this week – its regular monthly meeting Tuesday night and a quarterly retreat Thursday and Friday in Asheville. Tuesday’s meeting will include a discussion and possible vote on Piedmont Natural Gas’s request for a gas line easement through Fisher Farm, of Shearer’s Road in northeast Davidson.

Commissioners Tuesday also will continue discussion of a 5-year capital improvement plan for town. The meeting is Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Davidson Town Hall, 216 S. Main St., Davidson. See the agenda and related documents on the town website. Read the full story

Girl Scouts are celebrating their 100th anniversary this year, and organizers are hoping to boost their ranks by forming 100 troops in the Lake Norman area at meetings this month. The Davidson Housing Coalition’s 8th annual Festival for Hope and Housing will fill downtown with bicyclists and festival-goers this Saturday, Sept. 8. After morning rides of 50K and 100K, the festival on the Village Green will included live music, kids’ activities and food from local restaurants.

Marcia Webster, the housing coalition’s executive director, said the festival is open to all.

“People do not have to be bike riders,” Ms. Webster said. “You can come out to the Green and have lunch. We’ve got musicians playing from 11 to 2 and we’ve got kid friendly activities.” Read the full story

Massachusetts artist Lydia Musco was directing coworkers Wednesday as they delivered shipping crates holding three book-inspired sculptures that will become the centerpieces of downtown Davidson’s newest public art project. The new “Book Garden” is being constructed off Main Street, between the Davidson public library branch and the CVS pharmacy. Read the full story
