A half-dozen Davidson men gathered at Raeford’s Barbershop in downtown Davidson on Thursday for a shave – their last for a month. They’re among at least 40 local men who will be growing mustaches for “Movember,” a worldwide month of events dedicated to raising money and awareness of prostate cancer and other men’s health concerns. Davidson College will host public events in November that range from a lecture by New York Times columnist David Brooks to a program on John Lennon by NPR music critic Tim Riley to an event called “Fun with 
Mathematics” by Davidson’s math department. The Davidson College Symphony performs a concert that includes Rimsky-Korsakov’s “Scheherazade” and the art department hosts an opening reception for an exhibit recalling the Davidson National Print and Drawing Competition (1972-1976). The rash of suicides around the area over the past couple of years has many of us asking how we can help. A town-sponsored suicide prevention committee has been meeting weekly since the first week in September to discuss ways of helping those in crisis and ensuring support for mental and emotional health in the community.
On Saturday, Nov. 3, the committee will host a “Gathering on the Green” with a program focusing on the issue of suicide. It begins at 2 p.m. on the Davidson Village Green, Main Street and Concord Road.
And the town will begin offering free “QPR” (“question, persuade and refer”) training in January to help citizens respond. Read the full story

On Halloween night (Wednesday, Oct. 31), children from Davidson Elementary School will be trick-or-treating for UNICEF to collect money for kids in need.
The program helps the students realize that they can do something to help the many children throughout the world who do not have enough food to eat, clothing to wear, or a place to live.
If you would like to contribute, please look for the trick-or-treaters with their UNICEF boxes or you can make a donation online. A UNICEF website has been created for Davidson Elementary at inside.unicefusa.org/goto/davidsonelementary
Davidson’s online goal is only $250 which is enough money to purchase a “School in a Box’ so that students in unsettled areas can learn anywhere.

HUNTERSVILLE – Historic Rural Hill marks the final weekend of this year's Amazing Maize Maze with a canned food drive for the Angels and Sparrows Soup Kitchen. Bring a donation of canned food and get a buck off your admission.
The maze, on a 7-acres cornfield off Neck Road in Huntersville, will be open Friday through Sunday, Nov. 2-4, from 10am to 5pm. And if you're looking for an adventure, try the nighttime flashlight maze Friday and Saturday beginning at 6pm (last tickets sold to those in line by 9). Read the full story
