The Davidson Boys & Girls Club has begun registration for its fall after-school program and plans a kick-off cookout and performance by the Johnson C. Smith University drum section Thursday, Aug. 30, from 5-7 p.m. at Ada Jenkins Center, 212 Gamble St., Davidson. The cookout originally was announced for this Friday, but was rescheduled. Residents from Hobbs Hill and Armour Street are invited to a neighborhood meeting tonight (Tuesday, Aug. 21) at 7 p.m. at Davidson Town Hall with Police Chief Jeanne Miller. Chief Miller will be available to discuss the shooting on Armour Street last Saturday, Aug. 18. For more information, call the police department at 704-892-5131.

School supplies are being prominently displayed at CVS.  The dorm location boards are up around Davidson College.  School parking lots are no longer vacant.  This can all mean only one thing – the start to the 2007-08 school year.

Concerts on the Green will resume with a swing band Sunday evening, so grab your dancing shoes and a lawn chair and plan to be at the village green by 6 p.m.  Also this weekend, Davidson artists will be among those exhibiting at the Cotton Ketchie Arts Festival in Mooresville this weekend, Main Street Books will hold a story hour for children Friday morning and Summit Coffee will have cool tunes Friday and Saturday evening. Are you happiest tuned in to Celtic melodies or Russian folk songs?  Whatever your tastes, there’s probably something for you in the eclectic new lineup of public concerts brought to Davidson by St. Alban’s Episcopal Church.

The year opens with a Bach extravaganza (do you recognize the Bach boys in the photo?) Sept. 16 and continues through April with a total of six concerts.  Series subscriptions will be available through Sept. 11. Read the full story

Rain is in the forecast, people, and that could mean a “cooling off” — into the low 90s. If you’re brave enough to venture out onto the sizzling sidewalks, then keep in mind there should be cool tunes at Summit Coffee evenings this weekend. Also, remember that the Ada Jenkins Center offers free fans to senior citizens and the public library is cool and quiet and open every day but Sunday. Looking ahead, there will be important government meetings early in the week, plus a special youth program to prep kids for social skills at school, and an art festival in Mooresville that will feature Davidson artists.
