Volunteers are being sought for a couple of hours this coming Saturday, Sept. 29, to help clear a walking path along an unbuilt portion of the Pinecrest Road right of way. The trail is designed to make it easier for pedestrians, especially students walking to Davidson Elementary.

The Davidson College Symphony and Jazz Ensemble play the final Concert on the Green of 2007 this evening at 6 p.m., starting off another event-filled week in Davidson. Also on the schedule: A pot-luck supper on the Green to honor Exxon station owner Wayne Stowe, who is retiring; an information session about the town’s planned tree inventory, and the “BBQ, Blanket & Bluegrass” festival at Beaver Dam, which includes a kickoff for the new townwide Davidson Reads program.

Face painting, pony rides, bouncy houses and more will be available for kids on the Village Green Saturday as part of the annual Children’s Schoolhouse Carnival. The event is hosted by the Children’s Schoolhouse, a preschool/kindergarten founded in 1971 by a group of Davidson parents. The school now serves about 40 families in a renovated former one-room schoolhouse at Caldwell Station in Huntersville. That’s one highlight in a weekend that also includes the Run for Green half-marathon, the Davidson College orchestra and jazz ensemble performing on the green Sunday, a special bake sale for a classmate in need sponsored by the IB Middle School and more.

Davidson Planning Director Kris Krider will be the guest speaker at the Downtown Davidson Inc. 2007 annual meeting Thursday, Sept. 20, 5:30-7:30 p.m., at Davidson Village Inn, 117 Depot St. It’s the first annual meeting for the organization, which promotes Davidson’s downtown. The agenda includes election of officers, the annual report and a wine-and-cheese reception.

Main Street Books will hold a story time for children age 5 and younger on Friday, Sept. 21, at 10 a.m. Story time is the first and third Friday of every month at the store, 126 S. Main St. For information, call 704-892-6841.

Stowe’s Exxon on South Main Street will close Dec. 21 as owner C. Wayne Stowe shuts the business to make way for an office and retail building. Will customers follow Mr. Stowe and son-in-law Jerry Cline to their planned new shop in Mooresville? The calendar this week includes a couple of public meetings of interest in Davidson neighborhoods. On Tuesday, residents of the Armour Street/Hobbs Hill neighborhood are invited to town hall to discuss neighborhood issues, including possibly forming a block watch. Then on Thursday, town planners and developers proposing 34 luxury homes on 17 acres off Pine Road will hold a follow-up planning workshop, beginning with a site visit at 1 p.m. Also this week, Downtown Davidson Inc.’s annual meeting Thursday and the Davidson Land Conservancy’s Run for Green half-marathon, 5-k and fun run.

It looks like Davidson residents will have at least two public opportunities in coming weeks to see and hear candidates running in the Nov. 6 Town Board election — at forums Oct. 4 and 18. Meanwhile, town board hopeful Rodney Graham has opened up shop on the internet. And town board candidate Lenny McAllister is touting summer activities, including an appearance with Republican U.S. Sen. Elizabeth Dole.
