Davidson’s annual Town Day Road Race, which helps raise money for Davidson Cornelius Day Care Center, will draw runners from throughout the area to the Village Green on Saturday morning, May 5. A Mother’s Day Rally for Peace is planned Sunday, May 13, from 1 to 3 p.m. on the Village Green in Davidson, organized by mothers committed to finding peaceful resolutions to world conflict.
The event will include speeches by Davidson Mayor Randy Kincaid, UNC Charlotte anthropologist Joyce Dalsheim, military veteran Scottie Nicholls and Davidson College religion professor emeritus David Kaylor. Read the full story

Two events at Town Hall this week will look at new developments in the planning stages – one a proposal to fill in a gap in the Davidson East mixed-use project east of town and the other a revised plan for the Stowe’s Exxon site downtown.
On Tuesday, the town’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Board will discuss plans for a new town community center. Also this week, Town Day brings fun and food to the Village Green on Saturday, and Saturday night from 5 until dark, there’s a barbecue and bluegrass fund-raiser out at Beaver Dam for the Our Towns free medical clinic. Davidson College students may be in the midst of preparing for their finals, but they also have Virginia Tech on their minds. News of the shootings April 17 that left 33 students dead “really hit close to home here,” wrote Jon Wolf on the Davidson College website, “The event has made us feel that all campuses are one, and we want to do something to help.”
The result is “One Campus Tribute Concert,” to be held Sunday, from 2-5 p.m. on the lawn in front of the Belk dormitory. Jazz, rock and choral student groups will perform for the public, free of charge. Donations will be taken to benefit the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund at Virginia Tech.
That’s the highlight of a weekend in Davidson that will also include an AIDS benefit, piano recital, a lacrosse game and also the annual “reptile day” Saturday at the college. Read the full story

Wearing yarmulkes, munching on Israeli snacks and tossing around Hebrew words, students at Beth Shalom of Lake Norman turn a Davidson church school into a center for Jewish learning every Thursday afternoon.
An open house from 5-6 p.m. this Thursday, April 26, will give interested parents a chance to observe classes for children and youths. The open house will be at Davidson United Methodist Church, Room 125, 233 S. Main St. in Davidson.
“The Jewish community in this area is growing,” said school director Barbara Ezring of Charlotte. “Where you have development and growth you’ll see new Jewish families with children moving in.” Read the full story

Davidson Town Day on Saturday, May 5, tops the list of May programs at Davidson Parks & Recreation. The all day festival runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., with food and entertainment, a kiddie train for preschoolers, a kids’ bicycle rodeo a “bungee run” for adults. Entertainment features local bluegrass group Davidson Express, Clog Carolina, and Flex Flyer.
