Event at Beaver Dam offers rare regional foods in 10 courses

What is the Slow Food
USA Ark of Taste?
It’s a catalog of more than 200 foods threatened by industrialization standardization, regulation and environmental damage. It aims to protect and promote foods that are not only delicious, but also culturally or historically linked and may be at risk of extinction.

Critically endangered foods, such as meat from the Red Wattle Hog and the American Chinchilla Rabbit as well as fruits like American Heirloom Pears, will be the focal point of a unique dining experience this May, The Ark of Taste: A Slow Food Feast.
Ten top North Carolina chefs will present 10 courses, each featuring a rare regional food at a celebratory dinner on Saturday, May 16, 6 p.m., at Beaver Dam Park, off Davidson-Concord Road. The event is a fund-raiser for the local Slow Food chapter and local farmer’s markets, including Davidson Farmers Market. Read the full story

It’s Autism Awareness Month again and the local chapter of the Autism Society of N.C. is holding its annual Autism Aware Fare all over Mecklenburg County this Tuesday, April 21. All you have to do is visit a participating restaurant and eat! Meanwhile, we also bring you news about these upcoming events:
- The Kate MacIntyre Foundation, founded in honor of the late director of Downtown Davidson Inc., has postponed its April 25 “Art for Life” fund-raiser for lung cancer research and education. Details in our Monday, April 20, news story.
- Our Towns Habitat for Humanity plans a “Racin’ Rockin’ ‘n Roofin’” party and fund-raiser Saturday, April 25.

- The 5th annual Dick Sanderson Driving 4 Life golf tournament is this week, and two other golf tourneys are on the calendar: One for Davidson Day School Monday, and the Lions’ annual Russell B. Knox Golf Tournament Monday, April 27.
- Davidson basketball player Bryant Barr is organizing a 3-on-3 basketball tournament and silent auction to raise money for mosquito nets for African families, to prevent malaria.

Davidson College’s Davidson Outdoors program will present two Wild Food Classes with traditional arts and wild food specialist Mark Warren April 18 and 19 at the college union.
The class will explore basic botanical background, foraging technique, and local available wild food. You’ll also spend part of the afternoon exploring the Davidson campus for possible edible plants. The class is offered from 9 am to 3 pm on either Saturday, April 18, or Sunday, April 19. (Same class both days.)
Signups are in the Davidson Outdoors office, in the basement of Alvarez College Union. Price: $15 for faculty/staff/students. Please email Katie Epstein kaepstein@davidson.edu with questions.
