Scouts will distributed these bags this week for Saturday collection.
Davidson Cub Scout Pack 58 will join Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts across the Charlotte area beginning this week for the annual “Scouting for Food” collection drive. The scouts will be distributing shopping bags this week to collect canned goods and toiletries. You can leave the bags outside and they’ll be picked up on Saturday, Feb. 4.
Food also may be dropped off at a designated collection center during the Scouting for Food and the Loaves & Fishes Food Drive, which runs through Feb. 12. Priority needs include canned meat, canned pastas, cereal, canned fruit and 100 percent fruit juice.

A Dembridge Drive resident told police this week that an unknown suspect stole his golf equipment valued at $5,500 from the River Run Golf & Country Club this week.
In addition, a Cornelius woman was charged with DWI after running her 2004 Toyota into a parked, unoccupied 2007 Mercedes-Benz SUV on Harbour Place Drive at approximately 30 mph. Read the full story

Davidson will celebrate the 40th anniversary of the first Town Day on Saturday, May 7, and residents may notice a different look and feel from Town Days in recent years. Hundreds of future William A. Hough High School students, their parents and siblings crowded in front of the new $57.6 million high school Saturday, excited to tour the modern campus for the first time.
Students marched to the celebration behind the newly formed Hough High Marching Husky Band, from nearby Bailey Middle School, where many incoming freshmen attended last year. The day included a festival in the school’s new football stadium. Hough’s Parent Teacher Student Association organized and paid for the event through donations and corporate sponsorship. Volunteers from Davidson United Methodist Church fanned out across the area Saturday for the church’s annual Great Day of Service. About 70 project teams helped with sorting, cleaning, landscaping, painting and other projects at local schools and nonprofit organizations. Read the full story

70-year resident says volunteering keeps her healthy

For a region that is being defined by all of the people moving here from other parts of the country, there’s still a large contingent of residents who have lived in the Lake Norman region for most if not all their lives.
Bernice Houston is private about her age and only offers this clue: She’s originally from Mooresville, but has lived in Davidson for 70 years. During that time, she has seen the farmland disappear through decades of development. In fact, her home off Sloan Street on Davidson’s West Side stands on what was once a cow pasture.
